EU har skyldighet att erbjuda skolundervisning för barn till anställda svenskar vid de olika EU-institutionerna. Det finns f n 13 särskilda skolor, s k Europaskolor, i 7 länder.
Sverige har svenska sektioner vid Europaskolan i Bryssel och Luxemburg. Undervisningen bedrivs där till stor del på svenska efter en speciell läroplan. Svenska staten anställer lärare vid dessa skolor och utför regelbundna inspektioner.
